How to position comms as a driver of business success.
Earlier this year at Ragan’s Employee Communications and Culture Conference, Kyle Dierking, head of client service at The Grossman Group, shared his thoughts on how internal communications can play an integral role in any organization’s overall business.
He told the crowd in Chicago that internal comms is more than just a function of a thriving business — it can serve as a fundamental driver of business success.
“Internal communications, when done well, really does power business performance,” Dierking said.
He added that the first thing internal communicators need to do when looking to make an impact for the business is to define their narrative.
“It’s your communications north star,” Dierkng said of comms pros figuring out their narrative clarity. “You should be pulling from it for every town hall, every email, every message.”
Dierking recommended that internal communicators carefully consider their channel choices before creating a messaging campaign. He recommended performing an internal comms audit to determine where employees are most reachable.
“Everyone wants to send an all-company email,” he said. “Everyone wants to be on the town hall agenda. But that’s not always the right move.”
He added that comms pros shouldn’t just pick a messaging channel on a whim.
“Your channels should have a clear purpose,” Dierking said, “If you don’t know the ‘why’ for a channel, neither do your employees.”
Dierking said that one of the most valuable skills comms pros can bring to their organization’s business activities is the ability to distill complex topics into easily digestible messages.
“Our job is to bring order to the noise,” he said. “That’s where we create real value.”
