For years now, tech companies have been adopting more pro-environmental policies than ever before. This is either on their own initiative or due to regulatory requirements from organizations like the EU. Phone brands like Google and Apple have already described their efforts in this regard. Now, Samsung has revealed that the new Galaxy S25 series has a greater presence of recycled materials in a key component.

Samsung increases use of recycled materials in Galaxy S25 series’ batteries

Batteries are among the most polluting components in any electronic device. The methods of extracting the raw materials needed can be very unfriendly to the environment. Fortunately, technologies are already emerging that, in addition to being more efficient, mitigate this impact. Meanwhile, manufacturers like Samsung have gone down the path of recycling cobalt from discarded batteries from used Galaxy devices.

Samsung started this trend in its products with last year’s Galaxy S24 series. With its latest flagship phones, the company has taken this a step further by setting up factories specifically dedicated to extracting cobalt from discarded batteries to use them in the manufacture of new ones. As a result, every battery in the Galaxy S25 lineup has 50% recycled cobalt.

How Samsung extracts cobalt from discarded batteries

To achieve the milestone, Samsung set up a “Circular Battery Supply Chain” with the help of partners. The process of extracting cobalt from discarded batteries has some stages. First, the company obtains the devices through exchange programs and other means. Have you ever wondered why Samsung wants your old phone and gives you credit for it? Well, this is one of the reasons.

Next, the batteries are safely discharged and turned into crushed fragments. These fragments go through a mixture of cobalt and other metals called “black mass.” Lastly, the black mass goes through a cobalt extraction process. The extracted cobalt is used to make the cathode material of new batteries. Factories also use the remaining cobalt during the final stage of the battery manufacturing process.

You can already pre-order the Galaxy S25 series through the company’s website and authorized retailers. Shipments of the devices will begin on February 7.
